What Happens If You Miss Your Bus on OurBus

What Happens If You Miss Your Bus on OurBus?

Miss your bus and your ticket is not dead. OurBus can move it to the next available bus the same day, seats permitting, but only if the bus you originally booked has not yet finished its trip, and only once. Cancellation closes 60 minutes before departure, so past that point the ticket can move but the money cannot come back.

That gap between can move and can refund is where the confusion lives. Two rules are running on two different clocks. One asks whether your bus is still out on the road. The other counts minutes against your scheduled departure. Our editorial team fact-checked both on the OurBus FAQ and the cancellation policy on September 28, 2026, and what we found is that the second clock is the expensive one. If your plans wobble before you travel, the OurBus guide to changing plans at the last minute covers canceling and rescheduling in advance. This post starts where that one stops: the bus is gone and you are still standing there.

What should you do in the first minute?

Contact OurBus rider support before you write the trip off, because your bus may be running late as well. OurBus tells passengers who think they are going to miss a departure to check with customer service first and confirm the real departure time rather than assume the worst. Support runs around the clock through live chat and email on the OurBus help page.

This is not a formality. A rider who is eight minutes behind and a bus that is six minutes behind are, in practice, a rider who makes their bus. The failure we see most often is the opposite one: somebody decides at minute three that it is hopeless, stops moving, and turns a near miss into a real one. Keep walking toward the stop. Track it in the OurBus app and you will see whether the coach has genuinely pulled away or is still two blocks out in traffic.

Can you take the next bus with the same ticket?

Sometimes, and the conditions are specific. The Missed Bus Policy is the OurBus rule that lets a missed ticket move to a later departure, and it carries four limits worth reading closely. The ticket can move to the next available bus only if the bus you originally booked has not yet completed its trip. It moves on the same day only, only if seats are open, and only once. Put those together and the shape is clear: this is a grace mechanism for a rider who is late, not a flexible open ticket. Frequency is therefore the thing to check before you panic, and in our experience it varies far more than newcomers expect. On a corridor with departures through the day, for example the bus from NYC to Philadelphia, the next bus is a genuine option. On a route with two departures a day it is not, and missing the first one moves your whole plan rather than just your ticket.

Upstate is where that bites hardest. Corridors like the bus from NYC to DC and the bus from NYC to Boston run often enough that a missed departure is an inconvenience rather than a lost day. The bus from Buffalo to NYC is the case we point riders to, because its last departure of the day leaves at 2:55 PM. We measured that window against the live route page on September 28, 2026. Miss the 2:55 and the Missed Bus Policy has nothing left to offer you, because there is no later bus for the ticket to move to. So how late is too late? That depends on your corridor rather than on the policy, and the table below is the fastest way to place yourself on the clock.

Where you are on the clock What you can still do Where that leaves you
More than 60 minutes out Reschedule to another date or time, or cancel. A fare difference may apply, and booking and facility fees are never refunded.
Inside 60 minutes, still moving Contact support and confirm the real departure time. Nothing lost, if you make it.
Inside 60 minutes, certain you will miss it Wait for the Missed Bus Policy to apply. Cancellation has closed, so the refund is gone, but the ticket may still move.
After departure, original bus still en route Ask to move to the next available bus. Same day only, seats permitting, and once.
After the original bus completed its trip Nothing. A no-show: the full ticket value is lost.

Why won’t the bus wait for you?

Because it is holding a timetable that other people are standing at stops for. OurBus states it plainly: a bus cannot be held at a stop to wait for a passenger, since the service runs to a fixed schedule with timed stops further down the line.

There is a number behind that rule, and it is the most useful figure OurBus publishes: more than 95% of OurBus trips depart within five minutes of the scheduled departure time. A departure time is a real deadline rather than an approximate one. OurBus therefore recommends arriving at least 15 minutes early, and that margin absorbs the part of the trip you cannot control. Finding the right curb is slower than finding the right street. At a large terminal the walk-in is longer still, so if your route uses the Port Authority Bus Terminal, budget for a concourse rather than a sidewalk. One more thing trips people up: you cannot fix a timing problem by getting on or off somewhere else, because passengers travel between the stops they bought tickets for.

What does it cost you to miss your bus?

Money, and the amount depends on when you accept you will not make it. A no-show is a ticket whose departure time passes with the passenger not aboard, and OurBus cannot provide a refund or a cancellation after the scheduled departure time. Before that moment the clock runs in stages. So when does the money actually stop being recoverable? More than 24 hours out, canceling returns the ticket price to the card you paid with. Inside 24 hours it goes instead to your account credit balance. The OurBus Wallet is that balance, spendable on a future booking rather than refundable to your bank. At 60 minutes before departure, cancellation closes altogether, and booking and facility fees are not refunded in any window. Put plainly: acting sixty-one minutes early and acting fifty-nine minutes early produce completely different outcomes, and the difference is the entire ticket price.

That single hour is the most expensive hour of an OurBus booking, and it is the one almost no rider plans for. Full terms sit on the OurBus cancellation policy page.

How do you stop it happening twice?

Move the ticket while you still have choices. Specifically, rescheduling stays open until 60 minutes before departure, and it is a far better tool than the Missed Bus Policy because you are choosing rather than negotiating. The rider who reschedules at lunchtime because a meeting is running long keeps their options open; the rider who sprints for a 6:15 and misses it is left with whatever the policy allows.

Groups are the hard case. One person missing a 6:15 does not only cost that person the trip, it costs the whole party the departure they planned around. A timetable that suits most of a group rarely suits all of it, and when the group is the trip, a private vehicle that runs on your clock fits better than individual tickets. OurBus Charters quotes exactly that.

For solo trips the routine is dull and it works: book the departure after the one you think you need, arrive 15 minutes early, and track the bus on the day. Riders on the bus from Ithaca to NYC and similar campus corridors tend to learn this once, in the week when everyone travels at the same time. Curious about us and who actually drives your route? Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a refund if I miss my OurBus bus?

No. OurBus cannot provide a refund or a cancellation after the bus’s scheduled departure time. Cancellation closes 60 minutes before departure, so the refund decision therefore has to be made before that cutoff, and booking and facility fees are not refunded in any window.

Can I use my ticket on the next bus if I missed mine?

Possibly. Under the Missed Bus Policy your ticket can move to the next available bus on the same day if seats are available and the bus you originally booked has not yet completed its trip. A ticket may only be moved once under this policy.

Will OurBus hold the bus if I call and say I’m close?

No. OurBus cannot hold a bus at a stop to wait for a passenger, because the service runs to a timetable with scheduled stops further along the route. Contact rider support anyway, since the bus itself may be running behind.

How early should I get to the stop?

At least 15 minutes before scheduled departure. More than 95% of OurBus trips depart within five minutes of the scheduled time, so the timetable is a firm deadline. Allow extra at large terminals in particular, where finding your gate takes longer than finding the street.

What if the last bus of the day has already gone?

Then the Missed Bus Policy cannot help, because it can only move your ticket to a bus that is still running that day. On thinner corridors this happens earlier than riders expect. Buffalo to NYC, for example, has no departure after 2:55 PM.
