Some of OurBus routes operate only 4-5 times a year. These are special routes that align with major university breaks like Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break so that students can find it easier to find reliable rides and travel back & forth during peak holiday season. Each passenger can bring one free suitcase with 1 purchased ticket. Additional suitcases can be brought after paying $30 each and must be pre-paid. Please note this applies only to suitcases or other items stored in the luggage compartment. Smaller items like backpacks that can fit on the traveler's lap are not counted.
Yes, but that will cost you more. We charge $30 each for extra luggage.
We do have some group discounts for college students.
While on some routes the vast majority of riders are college students, there is no requirement to be a college student to ride the bus. We welcome travelers from the wider community. We often get riders who are students’ friends and family members, faculty, university staff, and others who are simply looking for a convenient transportation option?
Most of our college break routes were started based on suggestions from students and parents. Write to PR@ourbus.com with information on your suggested route, including what college it serves, how many other students travel the same direction, and any other information you think is helpful. Our route planning team would be happy to hear your input.
We know that having a bus stop in walking distance of student housing is crucial to making OurBus college break routes convenient and efficient. We are often able to add a new location based on input from customers. If you reach our to pr@ourbus.com and let us know the suggestion, we will review it and if practical, add the location. However, there are often restrictions from campus authorities or narrow road widths that make it challenging to add every location.
Rest stops on the route are at the discretion of the driver. Typically, trips under 4 hours in length do not have a rest stop. Longer trips of 5 hours of more usually make a stop halfway for passengers to use the restroom or get a quick snack. It’s always a good idea to pack a snack, since the food options at rest areas can be very limited, and the rest stops are very brief.
Many OurBus routes connect to Airports, including our Blacksburg to Charlotte Airport route and Blacksburg to Dulles Airport route. We recommend leaving a minimum of 2 hours between the scheduled arrival time of the bus and the flight, to leave a buffer in case of traffic delays.
If this happens to you, contact our customer service and under our missed bus policy, we can move your reservation to the next available bus at no cost. Generally we recommend leaving a minimum gap of 1 hour between the scheduled flight landing time and the departure time of the bus.
Some college break trips are shows in upvote mode on the ourbus website. This means that the trip is not yet confirmed to run. You can put in your email to express interest in the trip. Once enough people have joined the interest list, the trip is confirmed and you will receive an email notification that it is open for booking.
Typically, it takes at least 30 unique passengers to be interested in a trip for it to be activated. To make your trip more likely to be confirmed, we recommend sharing word about the trip with others from the same college community who might be interested.
At many schools, students depart campus on different dates depending on their particular exam schedule at the end of the semester. Sometimes we will run buses on multiple days, but for some routes, there are not enough passengers to do this. You can express your preferred travel date by letting us know by email at pr@ourbus.com, or upvoting a trip.
Yes, we are happy to hear your suggestions of which colleges and universities we should go to next. Our routes are crowdsourced, so we need your valuable advice and suggestions on where to go next. We can offer college break transportation anywhere in the country.
To reschedule your OurBus ticket, here's how it works. If your scheduled departure is more than 60 minutes away, you can simply reschedule your original ticket(date of travel and departure time only) on our website by choosing the reschedule button on your passes or your ticket. If the transaction amount is higher than your available Wallet credits, then you can pay the difference via the available payment methods. In cases where the transaction amount is lesser, the balance will be stored in your Wallet for future use.
The DC Trails/Best Bus tickets can be canceled more than 24 hours before the departure time. DC Trails/Best Bus tickets can be rescheduled more than 1 hour and up to 24 hours from the scheduled departure time through the reschedule link provided on the DC Trails/Best Bus ticket. Once the ticket has been modified, it will not be eligible for a refund.
Passengers may bring one suitcase (up to 50 lbs) for storage in the cargo hold and one handbag to be kept on their lap. Carry-on suitcases are considered regular suitcases due to limited overhead space.
For intercity routes, extra luggage requires an add-on purchase during booking, except for buses operated by DC Trails, Interstate Bus, Gunther via Tripper Bus, Super Trans, Community Coach, Vision Tours via Sprinter Bus, and other cross-selling partners, where an additional ticket must be purchased to accommodate extra luggage.
Only 2 bicycles can be accommodated in the luggage compartment and such passengers should reach the pickup stop at least 30 minutes before.
OurBus does not allow animals or pets of any kind, except for trained service animals assisting a traveler. Service animals must be in a harness and under the control of a passenger at all times.
