If you need to get somewhere today, the useful thing to know is that the booking window does not close hours ahead of departure. Our FAQ is clear that if you are at the stop, you can purchase a ticket any time before the departure time from our website or app, as long as the trip is not sold out. There is no counter to reach before it shuts and nothing to collect on the way.
What it does take is a phone, a way to pay and a seat still being available. So what can you do at a few hours’ notice? Here is the short version, and the sections below work through each of these in turn, including what happens if your plans change again after you have booked.
| What you need | What to do |
|---|---|
| A seat today | Book on our site or app right up to the departure time, including while you are standing at the stop, as long as the trip still has seats |
| A way to pay | Use a card, or a payment method already saved in the app |
| Another option, because the trip you wanted is full | Check availability again and take the next departure on that route |
| To cancel | Cancel up to 60 minutes before departure. Minus some fees, the ticket price goes back to your card or your OurBus Wallet, depending on timing |
| To travel on a different trip instead | Reschedule rather than cancel — you keep the booking and move it |
| Help with any of this | Rider support, 24 hours a day |
Can you still get a seat if you need to leave now?
Usually you can, and you can do it standing at the curb. Tickets are reserved through our website or the app, and we have no facilities for cash payment at the stop, so the practical sequence comes down to this: find the next departure on your route, book it on your phone, and start making your way there.
One wording note, because our own FAQ can read two ways on this. It says tickets must be reserved “in advance” on our website or app, and in the same answer it says that if you are at the stop you can buy any time before the departure time. The sense of “in advance” there is ahead of boarding and through our own channels, not hours ahead of the bus. If that distinction matters to your plans, confirm it with us before you rely on it.
Three things affect whether a same-day booking works.
- Whether the trip is sold out. This is the real blocker. If a departure shows as sold out you cannot book it at that moment, so check current availability and look at the next departure on the route instead.
- Whether you can pay. A card, or a payment method already stored in the app.
- How soon you can reach the stop. We ask riders to be there at least 15 minutes before departure. That is our standing request rather than a booking cutoff, but it is the sensible target.
If a whole route shows as unavailable across every date, that can mean something different: our FAQ notes that routes which have not yet started service also appear as sold out. Our support team may be able to tell you which of the two you are looking at — the chat widget on our website is the place to ask — and it is worth asking before you give up on a route.
What do you actually need to board?
A phone with the ticket on it, and very little else. We use mobile boarding passes, which means there are no printed bus tickets involved at any stage: you buy online or in the app, and then show the pass to the driver as you board.
When you are in a hurry that genuinely helps, because there is nothing to collect beforehand and nowhere you have to travel to first. The things worth checking are the ones easiest to forget when you are not thinking clearly:
- That your phone stays charged and the pass stays reachable. Boarding is by mobile pass, so keep the official pass available in the app or in your confirmation email and make sure the phone will last the journey to the stop. A battery pack is worth bringing if you have one.
- That your payment method works, since there is no cash option at the stop to fall back on.
- That you know which stop you are going to. Our Help Center notes that the pickup and drop-off addresses appear on the ticket under “Stop Details”, and clicking that opens the stop location. The bus picks up from exactly the location shown on your ticket, and if a pickup point changes our team will tell you by email or text.
Is there a special policy for emergencies?
No, and we would rather say so here than have you find out at a difficult moment. We went looking through our own published FAQ and cancellation policy before writing this, and we found no bereavement fare, no compassionate rate and no separate emergency process documented in either.
What we do have is a cancel-and-reschedule policy you can use without explaining yourself to anybody. OurBus Assurance is its name, and under it you can cancel or reschedule for any reason, with no change or cancellation fee, up until 60 minutes before departure, on tickets bought through OurBus.com or our app.
Cancelling and rescheduling are two different things under that policy, and the difference matters when money is tight. So which one do you want? Consider what you need the booking to do: cancelling ends it and returns the ticket price somewhere, while rescheduling keeps it and moves it to another trip.
- If you cancel, when you do it decides where the money goes. Our policy says that for a cancellation more than 24 hours before departure, a card booking is refunded to the source account, while a booking made with wallet credit or through an online travel agency is credited to your OurBus Wallet. For a cancellation within 24 hours of departure, the ticket price is credited to the Wallet. Cancellation cannot be done inside 60 minutes of the scheduled departure time.
- If you reschedule, you keep the booking and move it to another trip. Our policy supports rescheduling existing reservations, and a different fare may apply to whichever trip you move to. Part-cancelling or part-rescheduling a booking is not possible — it moves or cancels as a whole.
- Either way, some fees stay behind. Our policy states that the booking fee, fuel surcharge and facility fee are not refunded on cancellation or rescheduling, and that those fees go back to your payment source only where we are the ones who changed the schedule.
Two exceptions are worth knowing before you count on any of this. Tickets on certain partner-operated services cannot be cancelled within 24 hours of departure, and on some of those services rescheduling runs on its own window — between 1 and 24 hours before departure, through a reschedule link on the ticket itself. If your booking is on a partner-operated service, read the terms on your own ticket before assuming the general policy covers you.
Our fuller guidance on changing a booking is in our last-minute bus travel guide, and what happens if you miss your bus covers the case where a coach has already gone. For questions about your own booking, OurBus rider support is available 24/7.
What if you do not know when you are coming back?

Book the outbound now and leave the return open.
That is often the position on an urgent trip, such as a family illness where you know you have to go but not for how long. So is a one-way the right call? Usually yes, in that situation. Booking one direction gets you moving today, and you can add the return when you know the date. Our guide to round trip or two one-way tickets compares which one usually costs less, and it is worth two minutes if you have them. If you do not, book the outbound and settle the return later.
What if someone else needs to travel instead of you?
You can book for them, and our FAQ is specific about how. Go through the normal booking process but put their name as the name for the ticket, not your own.
One condition comes with that, and it matters here: our FAQ says to make sure that, if they are not accompanied by an adult, the traveler is at least 16 years of age. Check that before booking a seat for a younger relative who would be traveling alone.
The other thing to settle at the same time is access. Whoever is boarding has to be able to open the ticket on their own phone, since boarding is done by showing the pass, so use contact details that reach the person actually getting on the bus.
What if several of you need to travel together?
Scheduled seats are bought one at a time, on the departures we run. When several people need to move at once, that can mean splitting across departures or waiting for one with enough seats left — which is a hard thing to be told when everyone wants to be in the same place quickly.
If you do need to travel together and on your own timing, a private vehicle is the other way to do it, and our charter arm handles that through group transportation services. It is not the faster option to arrange, so it suits a planned journey more than a departure tonight.
If a scheduled seat will do, check fares and book your trip and take the next departure that works. We hope the reason for the trip turns out better than you expect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy an OurBus ticket at the last minute?
Yes. Our FAQ states that if you are at the stop you can buy a ticket any time before the departure time through our website or app, provided the trip is not sold out. We also ask riders to be at the stop at least 15 minutes before departure.
Can you pay cash for a bus ticket at the stop?
No. Tickets are reserved through our website or app, including at the stop right up to the departure time, and we have no facilities for cash payment there. You will need a card or a payment method stored in the app.
Does OurBus have a bereavement or emergency fare?
We do not publish one. What we do publish is OurBus Assurance, which lets you cancel or reschedule for any reason with no change or cancellation fee up until 60 minutes before departure. The section above sets out where the money goes and which fees stay behind.
What is the difference between cancelling and rescheduling an OurBus ticket?
Cancelling ends the booking and returns the ticket price, either to your original payment method or to your OurBus Wallet depending on how far ahead you cancel. Rescheduling keeps the booking and moves it to a different trip, where a different fare may apply.
Do you need to print an OurBus ticket?
No. We use mobile boarding passes, so there are no printed tickets. Buy online or in the app and show the pass to the driver when you board.
Can you book an OurBus ticket for someone else?
Yes. Our FAQ says to go through the normal booking process but put their name as the name for the ticket. It also says to make sure that, if they are not accompanied by an adult, the traveler is at least 16 years of age.
Should you book a one-way ticket if your return date is uncertain?
Yes. Booking the outbound on its own gets you traveling today and leaves the return date open until you know it. Our round trip or two one-way tickets guide compares the two on price.
