Homecoming by Bus: Can You Get Back to Campus Car-Free?

Yes — OurBus runs from NYC to all four upstate homecomings this fall. The dates: Binghamton October 2–4, Cornell October 16–18, Colgate October 16–17, and Syracuse’s Orange Central November 6–8. Fares start at $18. Binghamton is the one you can genuinely do as a Saturday day trip. The others reward an overnight, and the schedules below explain why.

Alumni travel is its own animal. You’re not hauling a semester’s laundry — you’re carrying a garment bag for the reunion dinner, a game ticket bought months ago, and opinions about how the campus has changed. Homecoming is the fall weekend when a school invites its graduates back, and every school sets its own date. We measured the bus windows against all four official 2026 dates on September 7, 2026. One finding shapes everything: three of the four land in the same five-week stretch, and two share the exact same weekend.

In calendar order, from each school’s own announcement:

  • Binghamton University: October 2–4. The 80th-birthday edition. A downtown Block Party opens it Friday night, and Paul Reiser plays the Anderson Center on Saturday. One alumni deadline: registration for most events closes Sunday, September 27, per the university’s schedule page.
  • Cornell University: October 16–18. Homecoming football against Lehigh on Saturday, October 17, per the Cornell alumni site.
  • Colgate University: October 16–17. The same weekend as Cornell — relevant if your friend group split its loyalties. Colgate hadn’t named a football opponent on the page we checked, so verify the game details when you register.
  • Syracuse University: November 6–8. Orange Central is Syracuse’s name for its alumni homecoming weekend, and this year the Orange host Clemson in the JMA Wireless Dome. One trap to avoid: Family Weekend runs October 16–18 and is a different event. Alumni reunions anchor to the November dates.

Which Trips Pass the No-Hotel Test?

Here is where the route schedules sort the four campuses into two piles, verified the same day.

Binghamton passes. The NYC to Binghamton bus runs 9–10 times daily from $18, with departures until 11:59 PM. The return runs until 7:30 PM. At 3 to 3.5 hours each way, a Saturday out-and-back around the Fall Festival is entirely real. The stop is the Greater Binghamton Bus Terminal downtown, not campus, which suits the Block Party crowd fine.

Cornell is a maybe. The NYC to Ithaca bus runs 9–10 times daily from $25, and the last bus back from Ithaca leaves at 9:30 PM. The ride runs 4 to 5 hours each way, so the day trip is technically possible and honestly exhausting. An afternoon kickoff plus the walk from the stop — Downtown Ithaca on E. Seneca Street, a hill below campus — eats the margin. Most alumni will enjoy the weekend more with a hotel night.

Syracuse and Colgate do not pass, and that’s fine. The last NYC to Syracuse departure leaves at 4:45 PM; there is no evening bus up. The return’s last departure is 5:45 PM, which no Dome game ever beats. Plan Friday-to-Sunday around the November Clemson game instead. The payoff is that the Syracuse stop sits on Waverly Avenue, at the university itself. Colgate’s Hamilton, NY route is the starkest case: one daily departure at 8:00 AM, one daily return at 1:20 PM, right to the Colgate Student Union on Lally Lane. That return leaves before any Saturday game ends. For instance, even a noon kickoff is still in the third quarter when the bus pulls out, so Colgate homecoming by bus is an overnight by design — check current fares on the route page when you book.

What Should Alumni Do Differently from Students?

Three things, all calendar-driven. First, register before you book. Binghamton’s September 27 event deadline comes before most people think about transportation, and reunion dinners cap out. Second, treat October 16–18 as a crunch weekend. Cornell homecoming, Colgate homecoming, and Syracuse Family Weekend all land on it, so the upstate buses out of NYC that Friday carry three schools’ worth of demand at once. OurBus fares are demand-priced; for example, the gap between booking in September and booking that week is the gap between the $25 floor and whatever’s left. Third, mind the stops. Only Syracuse and Colgate put you on campus; Ithaca and Binghamton land you downtown, so budget the last mile. Do you need the 15-minute-early arrival rule for the ride home too? More than students do — you’re the one with a Monday meeting.

Pack like the weekend has two dress codes, because it does. The allowance is one 50-lb suitcase in the hold plus a lap bag, which fits the tailgate layer and the reunion-dinner outfit if you fold, not hang. Leave the folding chairs; the tailgate has enough.

And if this is a milestone year — the class of ’01 turning 25, a team reunion, the whole group chat agreeing to descend at once — stop coordinating twelve separate tickets. A private coach through OurBus Charters moves the reunion as one unit, on the reunion’s schedule, tailgate cargo included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the bus stop on campus at these schools?

At two of the four: Syracuse (Waverly Avenue at the university) and Colgate (the Student Union on Lally Lane). Ithaca’s stop is downtown on E. Seneca Street and Binghamton’s is the downtown bus terminal, so both need a short local hop or walk to campus.

Can you do Cornell homecoming as a day trip from NYC?

The schedule allows it. Buses run up until 11:59 PM, and the last return leaves Ithaca at 9:30 PM. But with 4 to 5 hours each way, it is a long day around a football game. The Binghamton weekend is the comfortable day trip; Cornell is better with a bed.

Is Syracuse homecoming in October?

No. Orange Central is November 6–8, 2026, with the Clemson game in the Dome. The October 16–18 weekend is Family Weekend, a separate event aimed at current students’ families.

When should you book the bus for a homecoming weekend?

The day your plans firm up. Book especially early for October 16–18, when Cornell, Colgate, and Syracuse Family Weekend all compete for the same buses. Demand pricing sells the cheap seats first. You can still reschedule up to 60 minutes before departure if things shift.
