Can You Get to Morgantown from DC Without a Car

Can You Get to Morgantown from DC Without a Car?

Yes, once service is back. The route is suspended right now and listed as set to resume in late November. When it runs, OurBus lists one bus a day from Foggy Bottom to Morgantown — 164.2 miles, about 4 hours 15 minutes, fares from $75 — dropping at Mountaineer Station on the WVU campus.

Both ends sit near transit, which is what makes the carless version possible. The part worth planning is the last mile: Mountaineer Station is a short walk from a PRT station, and the PRT is closed every Sunday.

What do the three legs look like?

Only the middle one is OurBus:

  • Getting to the bus in DC. The stop is Foggy Bottom, 23rd St NW and I St NW. The route page places it “across the street from Foggy Bottom metro station” — so the Metro exit is a street crossing away from the curb rather than on it.
  • The bus itself. The route page for the bus from DC to Morgantown lists one trip a day leaving at 2:00 PM, with free Wi-Fi, charging ports, live tracking and bottled water on select services.
  • Getting from Mountaineer Station to where you’re sleeping. This is the only leg OurBus doesn’t control, and it’s what the rest of this post is about.

So when do you actually arrive? We found no published arrival time on either direction page, so the number below is ours: a 2:00 PM departure plus the route page’s own 4h15 average puts you into Morgantown around 6:15 PM. Treat it as a planning figure, not a scheduled arrival, and check your ticket.

Coming back, the Morgantown to Washington route is not a mirror image. Its page lists two departures against the single one going out — 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM — plus extra weekend trips when demand justifies them.

Why does Mountaineer Station matter so much?

Because it isn’t a curb. So what do you step off into?

Mountaineer Station sits at 1112 Van Voorhis Rd on the Health Sciences side of campus, and the route page describes the stop as the “bus platforms in front of the station.” WVU describes it as a parking garage and transit hub with an indoor waiting area, and its PRT site puts the Health Sciences PRT station “close to Mountaineer Station and J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.” So you land a short walk from a campus rail station. Other systems use the same building: Mountain Line, Morgantown’s public bus network, stops there, and so do WVU campus shuttles such as the College Park and Northside Hills runs.

The PRT is West Virginia University’s Personal Rapid Transit — a small automated rail system with five stations: Walnut, Beechurst, Engineering, Towers and Health Sciences. WVU’s station pages put Walnut and Beechurst on the downtown and downtown-campus side, which is your way into town without a car.

Will the PRT be running when you land?

This is the question to settle before you book, and the answer depends entirely on which day you travel.

WVU publishes PRT hours of Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Sunday. Set those against the bus times and the gaps are specific:

If your bus PRT at that hour What to do
lands in Morgantown ~6:15 PM, weekday Open until 10:15 p.m. Walk to the PRT
lands ~6:15 PM, Saturday Shut since 5 p.m. Mountain Line or a ride
lands ~6:15 PM, Sunday Closed all day Mountain Line or a ride
leaves Morgantown 9:00 AM, weekday Open from 6:30 a.m. PRT can get you there
leaves 9:00 AM, Saturday Opens 9:30 a.m. Too late — plan another way
leaves 3:30 PM, Saturday Open until 5 p.m. PRT can get you there
leaves at any hour, Sunday Closed all day Mountain Line or a ride

Our comparison of the OurBus route pages against WVU’s published PRT hours, checked October 13, 2026. The arrival figure is our arithmetic. Which days run after the route restarts is not yet published, and the northbound page describes extra weekend trips as demand-dependent, so confirm your own date.

Consider the two Saturday rows, because they are the ones the daily hours hide. A Saturday evening arrival misses the PRT by about an hour and fifteen minutes. And on a Saturday the PRT opens half an hour after the 9:00 AM bus leaves, so it can’t deliver you to your own departure.

What about the semester breaks?

They matter more than the daily hours, and this is the part that isn’t on the route page. WVU closes the PRT for university breaks. Its published PRT hours and closures list Fall Recess from November 22 to 29, and Winter Recess running from December 12 into early January 2027. The route, meanwhile, is listed as set to resume in late November. We found those two calendars overlap. If service returns on or before November 29, the first arrivals land while the PRT is shut for Fall Recess. After that it runs from November 30 through December 11, minus the Sunday in that stretch, and then closes again into January. Does that strand you? No. It means the PRT is the wrong thing to count on in that window, and Mountain Line keeps its own calendar rather than the university’s.

What should you check before booking?

Five things, in order:

  1. The resume date for your direction. OurBus lists each direction on its own page, and we found the two pages don’t currently agree on when service returns. Read the one for the direction and date you’re booking.
  2. Your stop, on your ticket. Both ends are specific: Foggy Bottom at 23rd and I, and the bus platforms in front of Mountaineer Station.
  3. Whether the PRT is open that day. Sunday is the obvious no. Saturday evening is the one the published hours bury.
  4. The vehicle. The Morgantown pickup description notes that trip runs with a van or a bus depending on passenger numbers, which is worth knowing if you’re bringing a semester’s worth of luggage.
  5. Arrival margin. The route page asks riders to be at the stop 10 to 15 minutes early and to re-check the assigned stop before departure.

If you’re a WVU student making this run regularly, the OurBus student travel page is where the discounts live. Mountain Line is free with a valid WVU ID, and the PRT is free for WVU Morgantown students, faculty and staff who tap a Mountaineer ID Card, at 50 cents for everyone else.

What if several of you are traveling together?

A single southbound departure is a hard constraint for a group. Everybody takes the 2:00 PM or nobody does, and northbound there are only two to choose between — awkward for a team, a family heading to a game weekend, or a club with equipment.

That’s the case for a vehicle on your own schedule. OurBus Charters covers it through its group transportation services. For one or two people, check the route page for your direction and book once service is confirmed for your date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct bus from Washington DC to Morgantown?

Not at the moment. The route is suspended and listed as set to resume in late November. When it runs, OurBus lists one trip a day departing Foggy Bottom at 2:00 PM, covering 164.2 miles in about 4 hours 15 minutes, with fares from $75. Check the route page for your date.

Where does the bus drop you in Morgantown?

At Mountaineer Station, West Virginia University — the bus platforms in front of the station, at 1112 Van Voorhis Rd. WVU describes it as a transit hub with an indoor waiting area, served by Mountain Line and campus shuttles, and a short walk from the Health Sciences PRT station.

Can you get around Morgantown without a car?

Largely, yes. The PRT links five campus and downtown stations, and Mountain Line runs 24 bus routes across Morgantown and Monongalia County. The limit is hours: the PRT is closed Sundays, closes at 5 p.m. Saturdays, and shuts for university breaks.

Does the PRT run on Sundays?

No. WVU publishes PRT hours of Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Sunday closed. It also closes for university recesses, so a Sunday or break-week arrival needs Mountain Line or a ride instead.

Can you do DC to Morgantown and back in one day?

From DC, no. The only outbound departure is 2:00 PM, arriving around 6:15 PM, and the last northbound bus leaves Morgantown at 3:30 PM — before you would arrive. From Morgantown the 9:00 AM reaches DC around 1:15 PM, but the only bus back leaves at 2:00 PM, which gives you roughly 45 minutes. Plan on staying overnight.
