In fact, when we measured the four itineraries side by side, we found that the dates are the easy part. What actually decides each trip is the last bus home, and that varies far more than you would expect. Here they are in calendar order.
Can You Do Ithaca’s Apple Harvest Festival in a Day?
The Apple Harvest Festival is downtown Ithaca’s free three-day celebration of Finger Lakes farms — cider, orchards, baked goods, crafts, and live entertainment — running Friday, September 25 from 12 to 8 PM, and Saturday and Sunday, September 26–27, from 10 AM to 6 PM. It takes over the blocks around the Ithaca Commons, and because Cornell sits up the hill, the whole town carries a college-weekend energy that suits a visitor without a car. Getting there is straightforward: the bus from NYC to Ithaca starts at $25, takes 4 to 5 hours, and runs 9 to 10 times a day. The first departure is 6:00 AM, from either Midtown or the George Washington Bridge Bus Station uptown. The bus drops in downtown Ithaca, a short walk from the festival blocks.
Coming back is the catch. The last Ithaca to NYC bus leaves at 9:30 PM.
Day trip or overnight? Technically, a Saturday day trip works: the 6:00 AM bus lands you downtown by late morning, and the 9:30 PM return exists. However, that return reaches NYC close to 2 AM. In our experience, the trip is far better as an overnight — Saturday at the festival, a Finger Lakes evening, and a relaxed Sunday bus home.
Is Fell’s Point Fun Festival Day-Trippable from NYC?
The Fell’s Point Fun Festival is Baltimore’s free waterfront street festival, now in its 60th year, filling the historic Fell’s Point neighborhood October 2–4. More than 225 vendors, live music, food, and drinks line the cobblestone blocks by the harbor. For instance, here is how a Saturday plays out. The bus from NYC to Baltimore starts at $17 and takes around 3 hours 40 minutes, with 5 to 6 buses daily; the first departure at 9:10 AM arrives at Baltimore Penn Station just before 1 PM, and Fell’s Point is a quick local transit hop from there. The return sets your deadline: the last Baltimore to NYC bus leaves at 7:00 PM and takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, so you are home by roughly 10:30 PM.
Day trip or overnight? Yes, as an afternoon trip — about six festival hours if the buses run on time. That said, the 7:00 PM bus is the only way home that night, so book it in advance and treat it as a hard deadline. Alternatively, stay over and get the festival’s evening music too.
How Do You Get to the Head of the Charles Without a Car?
The Head of the Charles Regatta is the world’s largest three-day rowing regatta, sending over 11,000 athletes down the Charles River October 16–18 in its 62nd edition. Watching from the banks and bridges is free, and the course is lined with food tents and college crowds all weekend. This is the easiest trip of the four, and it is not close. The bus from NYC to Boston starts at $19, takes 4 to 4.5 hours, and runs up to 20 times a day starting as early as 5:00 AM. As a result, you have real flexibility on both ends: catch an early bus up, watch the morning races, get dinner in Cambridge, and still make a late Boston to NYC bus. Select departures run as late as 11:30 PM.
Day trip or overnight? Day trip, comfortably. Notably, this is the only festival on this list where the last bus home leaves after 10 PM, which means an evening in Boston costs you nothing in logistics. Frequency is the quiet luxury here; with up to 20 departures each way, a missed bus is an inconvenience rather than a stranding.
When Should You Go to WaterFire Providence?
WaterFire is Providence’s signature art installation — dozens of braziers rising from the three rivers downtown, lit at sunset while music plays along the water. The fall 2026 full lightings are Sunday, September 6, Saturday, September 26, Saturday, October 17, and Saturday, November 7, with a partial basin lighting on October 3. Full lightings begin around sunset and burn until 11 PM or midnight. Meanwhile, the bus math is unforgiving. The bus from NYC to Providence costs $27.55 with all fees included and takes about 3.5 hours, but it runs just 1 to 4 times a day between 8:00 AM and 7:30 PM. The return is stricter still: the last Providence to NYC bus leaves at 6:00 PM, before the braziers are even lit.
Day trip or overnight? Overnight, full stop. There is no same-day return from a sunset event on this corridor, and we would rather tell you that now than have you discover it at a dark bus stop. Therefore, book a Providence hotel for a Saturday lighting, ride home Sunday, and the trip works beautifully.
How Far Ahead Should You Book These Trips?

Specifically, low-frequency corridors like Providence (1–4 buses a day) and Baltimore (5–6) have few seats to begin with.
